New Berlin Library
A contemporary civic hub designed for community engagement, learning, and social interaction in Northeast Duval County
A 30,000-square-foot library envisioned as both sanctuary and social gathering place; designed to serve a growing Jacksonville community through light, material warmth, and adaptable public space. Recipient of the 2025 AIA Jacksonville Award of Excellence (Commercial Unbuilt).
Project Overview
Located in Jacksonville, Florida, the New Berlin Library redefines what a public library can be in the 21st century. Designed by PQH Group Design, the 30,000-square-foot facility will serve as a cultural and educational cornerstone for Northeast Duval County’s expanding population.
Conceived as both a place of quiet reflection and active engagement, the design organizes all functions along a clear central axis, encouraging discovery and visual connection between reading areas, study zones, and community gathering spaces.
Design Approach
The library’s architecture expresses openness, permanence, and belonging. A rhythm of vertical mullions across the façade evokes a monumental bookshelf, while expansive glazing fills the interior with natural light. The palette of warm materials, tactile finishes, and timeless proportions creates a civic identity that feels welcoming and enduring.
Inside, flexible zones support both individual focus and collaborative learning. Spaces for adults, teens, and children are distinct yet visually connected, encouraging intergenerational interaction. Multipurpose rooms with operable partitions expand or contract as needed to host civic meetings, art workshops, and community events.
Key Features:
- Adult, teen, and children’s reading areas organized along a central spine
- Teen gaming and study lounges promoting creativity and connection
- Children’s storytelling nooks designed for early learning and imagination
- Café and gallery at entry that welcome visitors into a shared civic space
- Multipurpose rooms and technology hubs supporting workshops and forums
Impact
The New Berlin Library is a community anchor that reflects Jacksonville’s investment in lifelong learning and civic life. By blending flexible design with a strong architectural identity, the library will foster exploration, connection, and a sense of shared ownership for generations to come.
